Norse girls drop two in DC play

The Whitehall girls basketball team had a tough week offensively in two Dairlyand Conference losses.

The Norse never got going in a 39-29 loss to Alma Center Lincoln last week Tuesday. On Friday, they trailed by 18 as they had just 16 points at halftime against Melrose-Mindoro before going on to lose 55-42.

The losses came after the Norse had won five straight as they enter this week with a 9-6 record (4-6 in DC play). After playing Cadott on Monday of this week, the Norse hosted Gilmanton on Tuesday and will welcome Blair-Taylor on Thursday before going to Port Edwards on Friday. This coming Tuesday Whitehall will play at Augusta.

Whitehall’s offense never got started in a 10-point loss.

Despite scoring just 11 points in the first half, the Norse were very much in the game thanks to the defense limiting the Hornets to 15 points. The difference in the second half came at the free throw line.

Whitehall had more field goals in the second half than AC Lincoln did, but the Hornets went 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. The Norse made seven field goals in the second half, but only four free-throw attempts, all of which were made.

AC Lincoln shot two percentage points better from the field and they went 13-for-21 from the free-throw line, while Whitehall was four-for-five.

Norah Youngbauer led Whitehall with seven points while both Brenna Clatt and Trinity Aasen scored six.

The Norse stumbled out of the gate and the Mustangs took advantage.

Whitehall’s offense continued to struggle in the first half, managing just 16 points while Mel-Min more than doubled the total to take an 18-point lead into halftime.

The Norse finally got going in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs were in control.
