Norse girls top A/P, lose three

For the second time in less than a week the Whitehall girls basketball team defeated Alma/Pepin, but they dropped three other games last week.

Whitehall’s week got off to a tough start with a 42-29 loss to Alma Center Lincoln on Monday, but they rebounded with a 44-32 win over A/P on Tuesday. That was followed with a 77-19 loss against Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday before a 37-35 loss at Independence on Saturday (see story elsewhere in Sports).

With a 4-13 overall record and 2-9 mark in Dairyland Conference play, the Norse hosted Augusta this week Tuesday before going to Cochrane-Fountain City on Friday. This coming Monday they play host to Blair-Taylor before rounding out the regular season with games at Gilmanton on Tuesday and Eleva-Strum next Thursday.

The Norse couldn’t overcome a tough offensive start.

Whitehall had just one field goal and missed five free throws in the first half as they trailed 19-6 at halftime. The offense got going more in the second half, but the hole was too deep.

For the game, Whitehall missed 11 of their 22 free-throw attempts, but they had seven made field goals in the second half to stay in the game.

Ariel Koxlien led the team with 14 points, but nobody else had more than five, the total Mykensie Beighley ended up with. Olivia Youngbauer scored three with Sam Huff, Nylah Lisowski and Abby Semb all finishing with two and Norah Youngbauer scoring one.

The Norse shot 20.5 percent from the field and two-for-12 on three-point attempts. The Hornets finished at 34.3 percent from the field as Whitehall’s defense also forced 23 turnovers.

The Norse took control of the game in the first half as turnovers helped them take a big lead.

Whitehall forced 28 turners in the game, which helped them to 24 points and 13 points in transition.

They got off to a fast start as Olivia Youngbauer knocked in two three pointers in the first half while Norah Youngbauer added another. The team also got four inside baskets from Koxlien as they took a 25-13 lead into halftime.

The game was more even in the second half, but the Norse were able to keep the Eagles safely in the distance.

The teams shot comparable percentages from the field with Whitehall finishing at 37.3 percent and A/P at 35.5, but the Norse had 20 more field goal attempts, partly because they committed 12 fewer turnovers.

Koxlien led the team with 12 points, one more than Olivia Youngbauer while Norah Youngbauer scored seven, Nylah Lisowski finished with four, Nicoya Yarrington had three, Sami Huff, Kensie Beighley and Andrea Sonsalla all scored two and Brenna Clatt finished with one.

As they have against most of the conference teams for the past few seasons, the Mustangs trampled over the Norse early.

Mesa Byom scored 13 first half points while Teagan Frey added 12 with the Mustangs taking a 47-8 lead into halftime.

Whitehall got some offense going late as they were able to earn more free-throw attempts in the second half than they did in the first, but they still managed just three field goals in each half. Whitehall shot 17.6 percent from the field in the game and committed 28 turnovers.

Abby Semb led the Norse with six points while Olivia Youngbauer scored four, Brenna Clatt and Nylah Lisowski both had two and Ariel Koxlien and Norah Youngbauer both had one point.
