Norse golf season ends in sectional

After a strong start at Dodge-Point Country Club in Mineral Point last week Tuesday, the Whitehall golf team slowed down and settled into ninth-place at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Three sectional.

The Norse shot a 181 in the first nine holes as Keanu Estenson fired a 40. But the back nine wasn’t as kind to Estenson or the Norse. The team shot a 201 to finish with a score of 382, ahead of Nekoosa (391), Markesan (416) and Wonewoc Center/Hillsboro (425).

Only the top two teams advanced and, even if Whitehall had continued its strong play and scored a 181 on the back nine, it still would’ve fallen well short of the score needed to move on to the state tournament. Mineral Point emerged as sectional champions with a 314 and Barneveld was the second qualifier, shooting a 346. Cochrane-Fountain City finished third with a 351 followed by Luther, 361; Abundant Life Christian, 367; Pardeeville, 376; Central Wisconsin Christian, 378 and Whitehall.

C-FC’s Cameron Lipinski was one of the three individual qualifiers.

Matthew Poulos led Whitehall with an 89, shooting a 46 on the front nine and a 43 on the back. After starting hot, Estenson shot a 57 on the back nine, tying with Drake Jurowski for the second-best score on the team; Jurowski had splits of 50 and 47. Kaehl Baken had a 47 on the front nine and a 52 on the back for a 99 while Grant Olson had splits of 48 and 53 for a 101.
