Norse lose close match to Lancers

After splitting close second and third sets, the Whitehall volleyball team lost the fourth to drop its match against Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 3-1 last week Tuesday.

The match was Whitehall’s first home competition of the season and they held tight with a team that regularly finishes near the top of the Dairyland Conference standings, but couldn’t pull out the win.

The loss dropped Whitehall’s record to 2-6 on the season and 0-2 in Dairyland Conference play before they played at Blair-Taylor on Monday of this week and at home against Gilmanton on Tuesday. They’ll play at Augusta on Thursday and at home against Independence this coming Tuesday.

The second and third sets were decided by the minimum amount of points as Whitehall earned a split in those, but ECI controlled both the first and fourth to win the match 3-1.

After an eight-point win in the first set, the Lancers squeaked out a two-point win in the second. The Norse battled to take the third set, but were unable to force a decisive fifth set.

Avery Sonsalla had 11 kills to lead the team, while Norah Youngbauer came through with nine. Sierra Kierstyn and Olivia Killian both had five kills and Hailey Przybilla had one. Abby Koepke had 17 set assists, Kierstyn added seven, Sonsalla, Vaida Goplin, Shaelee Moats, Kambrie Wurzer and Youngbauer all had one. 

Przybilla led the Norse at the service line with three aces as Vaida Goplin and Wurzer both had one. 

Youngbauer led the team with 18 digs, while Wurzer finished with 17, Sonsalla had 11 and Brinna Goplin had 10.
