Norse score big, win two of three

The Whitehall softball team started the week hot, outscoring Alma Center Lincoln 32-1 in a doubleheader sweep before falling to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran.

The Norse swept last week Monday’s road doubleheader by scores of 15-0 and 17-1. The team lost, 9-6, the following day at Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran.

Whitehall began this week with an even 5-5 record before playing at Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday. They’re slated to host Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday before playing at Alma/Pepin Friday. They’re set to play at Blair-Taylor this coming Tuesday.

Whitehall 15 ACL 0

Whitehall came out swinging with six runs in the first inning and they never looked back.

The first five runs all came without a hit as seven Whitehall batters walked and another was hit by a pitch. Harlow Foss then singled to give Whitehall a 6-0 lead.

Addison Herman singled in the second and an error on the play allowed two runs to score.

The Norse put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. After two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases, Foss singled in one run. Two straight walks brought two more runs home before Taylor Johnson’s three-run double. Olivia Killian singled to score Thompson and end the game by mercy rule.

Whitehall had nine hits in the game, two by Foss, Johnson and Coburn. Johnson had four RBIs while Foss, Killian and Herman all had two. Whitehall also managed 12 walks in the game.

Ashlyn Clatt got the win, holding the Hornets to one hit, while striking out seven and walking five.

Whitehall 17 ACL 1

The Hornets stung first, but the Norse swatted back with 17 unanswered runs.

A walk with the bases loaded brought a run in for the Hornets in the bottom of the first, but it was all Whitehall after that.

A bases-loaded walk tied the game before Foss doubled in two runs. Kyla Lambeck singled in another, giving Whitehall a 4-1 lead.

Herman singled in another run in the third before Foss brought two home with a hit. Johnson and Killian had RBI singles as part of a 10-run fourth. Five more runs scored on walks and an error before Johnson added her second RBI single of the inning. Addison Poeschel added an RBI single to make the score 17-1.

Poeschel was the winning pitcher, striking out four while allowing five walks and two hits.

Foss had two hits and five RBIs in the game, while Johnson had two hits and three RBIs and Poeschel added two hits. Whitehall managed 12 walks and struck out just one time.

ECI 9 Whitehall 6

The Norse seemed to be in a good position after scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead, but the Lancers responded with five of their own.

The Norse trailed 4-1 entering the sixth inning, but Poeschel singled in two runs to cut the deficit to one. After a Lambeck walk loaded the bases, Johnson cleared them with a triple to give her team a 6-4 lead.

That wouldn’t hold, however. The Lancers tied the game on an inside-the-park home run with one out in the sixth. They added two singles and a triple, matching the five runs Whitehall put up in the top of the inning to take a 9-6 advantage.

Johnson had two hits and four RBIs for the Norse, while Poeschel had two RBIs.

Clatt took the loss, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts while allowing 10 hits and four walks. The Norse committed four errors, allowing five unearned runs.
