Norse softball team drops three

The Whitehall softball team struggled defensively, allowing double-digit runs in three losses last week.

Two of the losses came to Dairyland Conference leaders as the top team in the Large Division, Melrose-Mindoro, took an early lead and won 14-7 last week Monday. The next day, the DC-Small’s top team, Cochrane-Fountain City, blanked Whitehall, 10-0. The Norse fell to Alma/Pepin, 10-0, on Friday, but no further information from that game was provided for the Times.

Whitehall began the week with a 5-8 overall record (3-6 in DC play) before Tuesday’s game at Blair-Taylor. The team hosts Eleva-Strum on Thursday before heading to Melrose-Mindoro on Friday. The final scheduled regular season game is in Augusta on Monday.

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament play is scheduled to begin next Thursday.

Mel-Min 14 Whitehall 7

The Mustangs scored five runs in the second, and three more in the third and Whitehall couldn’t catch up.

Mel-Min’s first run came on two walks and a groundout before the team had three straight hits — including two doubles — to bring home four more.

Olivia Killian tripled to bring in a run for Whitehall in the bottom of the second; she then scored on a hit by Addison Poeschel. But the Mustangs responded with three on two hits and an error in the third.

Three straight hits brought two more Mel-Min runs home in the fifth as they took a 10-2 lead. A two-run double in the sixth put the team ahead by 10 runs.

Ashlyn Clatt and Taylor Johnson singled and came around to score in the sixth. Olivia Killian walked and scored on a single by Addison Herman.

After Mel-Min scored a run in the top of the seventh, Whitehall scored two in the bottom half. Kelsie Klomsten walked and scored on a double by Harlow Foss, who later scored on a groundout.

Eight different Whitehall players all had one hit in the game.

Clatt took the loss, allowing 12 hits and five walks while striking out two.
