The outside shots were falling, but it wasn’t enough as the Whitehall boys basketball team lost to Bangor, 68-62, in the opening round of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Four tournament last week Tuesday.

Whitehall knocked down 13 three-pointers in the game, but Bangor wasn’t far off, hitting 11 to pull off the upset win as the ninth-seed beat the eighth-seeded Norse in Whitehall.

Bangor had a balanced offensive attack to take a 32-27 lead into halftime. Sophomore guard Will Youngbauer kept Whitehall in the game with six three-pointers in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. The Cardinals maintained the lead and clinched the win late.

Youngbauer had a team-high 23 points for Whitehall, while senior Cayden Johnston added 21. The team also got seven points from senior Mason Pientok while sophomores Bo Killian and Riley Herman scored six and five points, respectively.

With several new faces on the roster, Whitehall finished the season with an 11-14 record. Much of the roster will return as the team graduates two starters in Pientok and Johnston — the team’s leading scorer, averaging 17.3 points per game.
