Prescott ends Arcadia’s tournament run

Upsets got the Arcadia softball team into the sectional round, but they weren’t able to keep it going, falling to Prescott in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Three sectional semifinal game.

The seventh-seeded Raiders advanced to the sectional with upsets over (2) Westby and (3) Neillsville. The top seed in the sectional, Prescott, was too much, however. The game was close late, but Prescott had a big sixth inning to put the Raiders away, ending their season. Prescott went on to beat Northwestern in the sectional final to qualify for the state tournament.

The Raiders finish their season with a 10-10 record. They had few players with varsity experience prior to the season and had struggles along the way before getting hot in the tournament.

Prescott 14 Arcadia 5

The Raiders were within striking distance until the Cardinals exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning.

Three runs in the top of the fifth got the Raiders within one at 6-5. Prescott scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but the Raiders were still a couple swings of the bat away from winning the game until the sixth.

The first four Prescott batters singled in the sixth inning as they had eight hits total as part of the seven-run innings to break the game open.

The Raiders had one last chance in the top of the seventh, but they went down in order.

Arcadia scored first in the game as Chloe Halverson led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Casidi Pehler.

Prescott quickly took the lead, however. Their first two batters singled before a two-run double gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Another double put them ahead 3-1 at the end of the first inning.

Two more runs on three hits in the third put the Cardinals ahead 5-1.

Arcadia came back with one run in the fourth as Catherine Pehler hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Hallie Tulip. Prescott got that run back in the fourth, but it seemed as if the Raiders would make a late charge after a three-run fifth.

Brynn Aspen led off the fifth with a single and was scored by a Courtney Bjorge hit. Casidi and Catherine Pehler both had singles and scored on a double by Hailey Sonsalla, bringing the Raiders within one run.

Prescott got one run back with a home run to lead off the fifth. Arcadia had the tying run at the plate in the top of the sixth, but a sacrifice followed by a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat.

Arcadia had 13 hits in the game as Sonsalla was two-for-three with two RBIs while Kianna Suchla, Halverson and Catherine Pehler also had two hits.

Bjorge pitched into the sixth inning for the Raiders, striking out one with one walk while allowing 17 hits. Casidi Pehler replaced her with no outs in the sixth, striking out one while allowing five hits.
