Raiders end losing streak with sweep over Viroqua

After losing four straight, the Arcadia softball team got off the schneid in a big way, sweeping Viroqua in a doubleheader last week Monday.

Arcadia’s bats came alive as they scored a combined 27 runs in the two wins, the first being a 13-3 victory and the second won by a score of 14-6.

The wins put Arcadia at 6-7 overall and 5-4 in Coulee Conference play before they hosted first-place Westby on Tuesday of this week and went to West Salem on Wednesday. The Raiders host Black River Falls this coming Monday, closing out the regular season before Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play begins next Wednesday.

The Raiders scored seven runs in the first two innings to take control early.

Chloe Halverson reached base and scored in the bottom of the first inning before the Raiders put up six runs in the second.

Viroqua matched Arcadia’s run in the first inning, but the Raiders regained the lead when Brynn Aspen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Halverson singled in another run before Casidi Pehler doubled in three. Pehler then scored herself on a single by Sonsalla, putting the Raiders ahead 7-1.

Two runs in the top of the third made the game more interesting for Viroqua, but the Raiders got two back on an error with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.

An RBI groundout by Hallie Tulip made it a seven-run game before Suchla and Maggie Kujak added run-scoring hits. Casidi Pehler ended the game with an RBI double in the fifth.

The Raiders had 10 hits in the game as Halverson was three-for-three with four runs scored and two RBIs. Casidi Pehler was two-for-four with four RBIs and Hailey Sonsalla added two hits.

Courtney Bjorge was efficient in the winning effort, striking out three without a walk. She held Viroqua to four hits.

Viroqua started fast with two runs in the first inning, but the Raiders pulled away late.

Halverson led off the game with a walk and she came around to score on a wild pitch, putting Arcadia ahead 1-0, but Viroqua scored twice in the bottom of the first to take the lead.

Hallie Tulip batted in Hailey Sonsalla in the second to tie the game before the teams exchanged runs in the third inning.

Arcadia took the lead for good in the top of the fourth when Maggie Kujak doubled to score Tulip. Brynn Aspen doubled in two runs and two more scored on groundouts, making the score 7-3. Catherine Pehler then singled home Casidi Pehler.

Viroqua made the game interesting with one run in the fourth and then a two-run home run in the fifth that made the score 8-6, but Bjorge wouldn’t allow them to score again.

Bjorge helped her own cause with a two-run double in the top of the sixth. Catherine Pehler and Sonsalla added RBI hits and Kujak hit a sacrifice fly, making the score 13-6. Kianna Suchla the singled in the final run of the game.

Bjorge again didn’t allow a walk while striking out 10 in the second half of the double header. The Blackhawks had nine hits in the game.

Arcadia had 13 hits as Catherine Pehler, Sonsalla and Brynn Aspen all had two. Bjorge, Catherine Pehler and Maggie Kujak all had two RBIs.
