Raiders show improvement as they drop first two games

Arcadia softball coach Dave Bjorge was pleased with the improvement his team showed from its first game to its second, even if it ended in a loss.

The Raiders opened their season in Holmen on Friday as they allowed seven unearned runs in a 12-2 loss. The team was in action again the next day and Bjorge said he was really happy with the improvement the team showed, even though it lost to Fall Creek 3-2. The Crickets advanced to the sectional final round last year and have returned much of their roster.

Arcadia was scheduled to host Onalaska Luther on Tuesday of this week with a game against defending Coulee Conference champion Westby on Friday. This coming Tuesday, they’re set to host West Salem before going to La Crosse Logan next Thursday.

Holmen 12 Arcadia 2

Arcadia took an early lead, but they struggled for the last four innings.

Casidi Pehler singled in one run then came around to score on a hit by Kaitlyn Bremer as the Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Holmen went down in order in the bottom of the first and scored one in the second, but the Raiders kept the lead until the third. That’s when the Vikings plated four runs, they added three more in the fourth then ended the game with five in the fifth.

Courtney Bjorge took the loss for Arcadia as she threw the first three and one-third innings, striking out two with two walks and six hits. Only three of the seven runs scored off of her were earned. Pehler replaced Bjorge and walked three with five hits allowed while two of the five runs scored on her were earned.

The Raiders had three hits in the game.

Fall Creek 3 Arcadia 2

A run in the top of the eighth inning was the difference.

The Crickets led off the eighth with a hit. Arcadia’s Pehler got the next two batters out, but a single brought the go-ahead run home. The Raiders got one runner on in the bottom of the inning, but a ground out ended the game.

Arcadia took an early lead as Bremer reached base to start the second inning and scored on a single by Sammy Berg. The lead doubled in the third as Pehler led off with a single and scored on a hit by Bremer.

The Crickets scored one run on an error in the fifth, but managed just one runner in the sixth. They tied the game in the seventh as the leadoff batter singled and scored on a ground out.

Pehler took the loss for Arcadia, pitching the eighth inning with two strikeouts and two hits allowed. Bjorge tossed the first seven innings, striking out five with one walk and four hits.
