Raiders squeak past Fall Creek, split West Salem doubleheader

It was a largely successful week for the Arcadia baseball team, who scratched out a non-conference win against Fall Creek at home before going on the road and earning a doubleheader split against West Salem.

The Raiders (3-2, 1-1 Coulee) continue conference play when they host Westby on Thursday and play at Black River Falls on Monday, followed by non-league action against Eleva-Strum at home on Tuesday. Each game is slated to start around 5 p.m.

Arcadia 7 Fall Creek 6

The Raiders did just enough to pull off a one-run win over Fall Creek (2-3) in their non-conference clash last Tuesday at Parker Hagg Field.

When the Crickets jumped ahead 4-1 with three runs in the top of the third, Arcadia responded with a five-run rally in the bottom half of the inning featuring an Austin Fernholz RBI double and two-run singles by both Max Blaschko and Max Sobotta.

An insurance run in the fourth inning to make it 7-5 proved critical for the Raiders. Though Fall Creek scored a run in the top of the sixth, Fernholz slammed the door shut for a save in the seventh by striking out the side in a perfect inning.

Seven different Arcadia batters recorded a hit in the win, including doubles by Fernholz and Carter Wegman.

Arcadia 3 West Salem 1

Arcadia’s Login Scow pitched a gem for the Raiders, guiding them to a win over the Panthers (2-3, 1-1) in the first game of their Coulee doubleheader last Thursday in West Salem.

Scow allowed a run in top of the first but was nearly flawless the rest of the way, allowing just one baserunner and facing the minimum number of batters necessary over the final six innings of the game.

In seven stellar innings, Scow allowed just the one run on two hits and a walk while striking out 11.

RBI singles from Fernholz and Wegman gave the Raiders the lead in the bottom of the second, with Scow helping his own cause with an RBI single in the fifth. Fernholz went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

West Salem 8 Arcadia 2

Despite an early 2-1 lead for Arcadia, West Salem tagged the Raiders for three runs in the bottom of the fourth and a four-run rally in the sixth inning to earn a doubleheader split.

After that 2-1 lead through three innings, the Raiders could not generate any more runs the rest of the way despite having the bases loaded in the fifth, runners at second and third in the sixth and a runner at second in the seventh.

Sobotta and Deklyn Grzadzielewski each finished 2 for 4 at the plate for Arcadia in the loss.
