Raiders swept by Blackhawks in Coulee doubleheader
The Arcadia baseball team came up empty in two games played in Viroqua last Tuesday.
The Raiders weren’t able to get across home plate in the first game, losing 1-0. In the second, they had a 6-5 lead until Viroqua scored seven runs in its final at-bat to take the win.
The losses dropped Arcadia to 2-3 on the season before the schedule picks up this week. After playing at Onalaska Luther on Monday and at home against black River Falls on Tuesday, the Raiders play a doubleheader at home against Westby on Friday. This coming Tuesday, they’ll play at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau before going to BRF on Thursday and at Melrose-Mindoro next week Saturday.

The Blackhawks scored in the bottom of the first then held the lead throughout.
Griffin Olson, who was also Viroqua’s pitcher in the game, led off the bottom of the first with a single then scored on a groundout.
That’s all Arcadia starter Connor Weltzien would give up as he struck out 11 with just five hits and two walks allowed. But the Raiders weren’t able to give him any run support, managing just two hits and two walks off of Olson while striking out 10 times.
The Raiders threatened in the top of the fourth when Carson Martin doubled with two outs, but a ground out ended the threat. Vince Braun and Ryan Sokup had consecutive walks in the top of the seventh, but a pop up ended the game.

The Raiders were ahead before coming unglued in the top of the seventh.

Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for the Raiders before one run scored on a throwing error. Another came in on a passed ball then Gage McGuire doubled in two, putting the Raiders ahead 6-5. That was Arcadia’s only hit of the game.
That’s where the score stood until the seventh.

Preston Scow took the loss, pitching three innings with seven hits and four walks allowed, while he struck out three. McCoy Yarrington got the start, walking four with two walks while also striking out three. Vince Braun struck out the only batter he faced.
