Raiders swept by West Salem

The Arcadia baseball team struggled all around as it was outscored by West Salem 25-8 in a doubleheader on Monday.

The Raiders gave up six runs in the first inning of a 12-4 loss in the first game. The Panthers pulled away for a 13-4 win midway through the second game. The Raiders also lost a game to Independence/Gilmanton, 3-2, on Friday (see story elsewhere in Sports).

The losses put Arcadia’s record at 6-12 on the season prior to the final regular season game at Tomah on Monday of this week. If Arcadia’s season is going to extend beyond this week, they’ll need to upset West Salem on Thursday. That’s when Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play begins as the fifth-seeded Raiders play at (4) West Salem.

The winner of that game plays at (1) Altoona this coming Tuesday with the regional final round set for next Wednesday.

An error and two hit batters helped the Panthers take control in the top of the first inning.

A single brought one run in before Arcadia’s McCoy Yarrington walked a batter with the bases juiced. A double cleared the bases and put West Salem ahead 5-0 before another single added another run.

Ryan Gardow singled in a run in the bottom of the first for the Raiders and Carson Martin doubled in a run to make the score 6-2 in the third. The Raiders couldn’t catch up, however.

The Panthers got one run back in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead. Martin and Gardow brought runs home for the Raiders in the fifth to make it a 10-4 game, but West Salem would get both of those back.

Gardow had two of Arcadia’s five hits and had two RBIs. Martin also had two RBIs.

Yarrington took the loss, pitching the first five innings with nine hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Vince Braun tossed the last two, allowing two hits and two walks.

W. Salem 13 Arcadia 4

A big third inning put the Raiders ahead, but the Panthers took control in the fourth.

Arcadia entered the third trailing 2-0, but Martin tied the game with a two-run double. A sacrifice fly put Arcadia ahead then Yarrington was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 4-2.

But Arcadia wouldn’t score another run, while the Panthers were just getting started.

West Salem scored one in the bottom of the third then put up six in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead. They added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Martin had two of Arcadia’s five hits and had two RBIs in three at-bats.

Prestin Scow took the loss, pitching five innings, allowing 14 hits and one walk while striking out four. Martin pitched the sixth, allowing two hits, while striking out two without a walk.

Six different West Salem batters had two hits.
