Raiders thump Tigers in baseball opener

Two days after Arcadia defeated Black River Falls to close out the alternate fall football season, many of the same athletes competed on the baseball diamond in an 11-1 Arcadia win on Saturday.

The Raiders took an early lead then scored two or more runs in three straight innings to pull away.

Arcadia is jumping into the baseball season as they’ll host La Crosse Aquinas on Tuesday before heading to Westby for a doubleheader on Thursday. This coming Monday Arcadia plays at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau with games at Elk Mound next Tuesday and Onalaska Luther on Thursday.

A two-run home run by Carson Pehler got the Raiders on the board before they pulled away.

A one-out single by Carson Martin put a runner on board for Pehler who launched a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left field in the bottom of the first.

Two hits and a walk allowed the Tigers to cut into the lead, but that was the only run they’d get.

Ryan Sokup singled in Cameron Boland for one run in the bottom of the third before Alex Madden singled to score Pehler, putting Arcadia ahead 4-1.

Two Arcadia runs scored on an error in the fourth before John Severson singled Pehler and Martin home, making the score 8-1.

Four straight walks brought in another Arcadia run in the fifth before Pehler ended the game with a double, scoring two and giving the Raiders the win by rule.

Pehler went two-for-three with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Raiders. Madden was also two-for-three with an RBI while Severson was one-for-three with two RBIs. Martin, Sokup and Madden also had RBIs. Boland scored three runs thanks to three walks drawn.

Madden got the win, tossing a complete game with three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
