Red Hawk baseball earns three wins in busy week

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau high school baseball team is full speed ahead for the 2023 season.

The Red Hawks (4-4 overall, 0-2 Coulee Conference) battled through a busy slate of games last week, earning three wins as they played five games in six days.

Weather permitting, the Red Hawks will search for their first conference win at Arcadia on Tuesday. The week closes with a visit from Westby on Friday.

G-E-T 15 Tomah 10

Monday’s win over Tomah was helped by a late offensive burst from the visiting Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks scored eight runs in the final three innings to overcome an early deficit.

Owen Eddy led G-E-T with a pair of hits and four runs scored, while three pitchers combined for eight strikeouts for the Red Hawks.

West Salem 14 G-E-T 4

The Red Hawks gave up six runs in the fifth inning in last Tuesday’s loss to the Panthers.

West Salem had 14 hits in the victory. The Red Hawks were held to five hits of their own and suffered from eight errors on defense.

Chris Wagner was the lone G-E-T player to record at least two hits, and three pitchers split time on the mound for the Red Hawks on the road.

Chris Calico led West Salem with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with a double and a triple, and teammate Luke Noel had a home run.

Viroqua 8 G-E-T 3

Another conference opponent got the best of G-E-T at home last Friday.

The Blackhawks roared to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and held back the Red Hawks the rest of the way. The Red Hawks scored their three runs in the final two innings and were held to three hits.

Warren Stoner led G-E-T on offense with two hits and a double, while the visitors were led by a 3-for-4 day from Tyler Quackenbush.

Collin Handke (five) and Nathan Holthaus (two) tossed a combined seven strikeouts for G-E-T while allowing five earned runs.

The week ended on a positive note for G-E-T to get back to .500 on the year.

The Red Hawks scored 14 runs over two wins against Prairie du Chien at home.

A four-run explosion in the sixth inning carried G-E-T to their first win of the day, and the hosts jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second half of the back-to-back to pick up the second win.

Collin Handke led the way for G-E-T on offense in the opening win with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.

The second game saw Owen Eddy secure a pair of hits while teammate junior Jack Beedle hit a home run to lift the Red Hawks to their second win of the day.

Four pitchers saw work against the Blackhawks, striking out 11 batters and allowing nine hits across the two games.
