Red Hawk baseball ends Coulee play with split

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School baseball team ended Coulee Conference play with a victory over Black River Falls last week, two days after dropping a tight game with Westby.

At the start of this week, the Red Hawks were 6-12 this season and ended their Coulee schedule with a 5-7 record.

A game this Monday in Sparta closed the Red Hawks’ regular season slate. The team opens Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play as the ninth seed with a game at (8) Ellsworth on Thursday. The winner of that game will play at (1) St. Croix Central next Tuesday.

The Norse (14-5, 9-3 Coulee) snuck away with a win despite being outhit six to four in a game at G-E-T Middle School last Tuesday.

Both of Westby’s runs — one in the fourth inning and another in the fifth — were scored on defensive errors by the Red Hawks on a day the hosts finished with four mistakes.

Jackson Burns led G-E-T offensively with two hits, while Caiden Brady pitched six innings for the Red Hawks. Brady gave up three hits and struck out eight Westby batters.

Ben Filla closed the game on the mound for G-E-T. Devin Nedland picked up the win for Westby, tossing eight strikeouts.

The Red Hawks scored six runs in the bottom of the second and added an insurance run in both the fourth and sixth innings. The hosts outhit the Tigers (6-10, 4-8 Coulee) seven to one.

Nick Crum paced G-E-T with two singles. Adain Busch and Myles Marley co-led the team with two RBI.
