Red Hawk boys keep Raiders winless in CC

Sawyer Schmidt of G-E-T drove to the basket while being defended by Kaden Updike of Arcadia during the Red Hawks' 52-35 win Friday.

A matchup of Coulee Conference rivals started close, but the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys held Arcadia scoreless for a long stretch to pull away midway through the first half. The Raiders remained winless in the Coulee with the loss, falling to 0-7 in the conference.

The Red Hawks improved to 8-6 overall on the season with the win, including a 5-2 mark good for a three-way tie for first in the Coulee with Black River Falls and Onalaska Luther. G-E-T faced Luther on the road on Tuesday in the first of three games scheduled this week. Their week also includes a home game on Friday in West Salem, as well as a Saturday road game at Prescott.

G-E-T 52 Arcadia 35 - Arcadia took a momentary lead at 10-9 with 9:30 remaining in the first half on a Chandler Sonsalla free throw, but a Kyle Scherr bucket on the ensuing possession put G-E-T back ahead and ignited a run. Red Hawk Grant Beirne laid up on a contested finish the next time down the floor, which Lance Lettner followed with a pair of layups and a free throw to pull ahead to 18-10. Ethan Weltzien broke up the run with a three-pointer late in the half, but Beirne added another four free throws and a layup, and Sawyer Schmidt put in another two from the line as G-E-T ended the half up 27-13 after an 18-3 run. Michael Schweisthal tallied the first six for the Raiders in the second half as part of a 6-3 start, but G-E-T stayed in front by earning their three on a Beirne hoop and the foul. Schmidt followed with a two, and a Trent Harshman three kept the momentum with G-E-T as they led 35-19. G-E-T for the game out-shot Arcadia 36.5 percent to 25 percent from the field. The Red Hawks also limited turnovers, losing possession seven times to the Raiders' 14. Leading G-E-T for the game were 14-point nights from Schmidt and Beirne, while seven each from Lettner and Harshman, four each from Tyler Hammond and Roger Niederkorn and two from Scherr rounded out the scoring.
