Red Hawk boys second, girls fifth at home meet in Ettrick

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School cross country team ran its home track well last Thursday as the Red Hawk boys placed second and the girls took fifth at Ettrick Golf Club.

Six Red Hawk boys finished in the top 20 times on Thursday, while Arcadia had two runners inside the top 10 in a race that included five Times area teams.

The Independence/Gilmanton cross country team showed its strength in the girls race with four runners in the top 10, including a runner-up finish from junior Taylor Sylla in 19 minutes, 48.3 seconds.

Arcadia’s Monroy, G-E-T team pace county boys

Andy Monroy was the county’s fastest runner in the boys race, finishing third in 18:13.5 behind a pair of Mauston runners, including champion Josh Ellerman. Ellerman, a senior, won in 17:02.5.

Adrian Bautista led G-E-T with his seventh-place finish on a day the Red Hawks saw AJ Earney place 10th and teammate Sawyer Smock take 11th, helping the team finish second behind Mauston. Mauston saw five runners finish inside the top 10.

Carter Giemza placed 16th for the Red Hawks, which also saw Carter Giemza run to 16th and Carson Mayer take 22nd. Oliver Marley was the team’s final runner, taking 41st.

Monroy led Arcadia, which also got a ninth-place run from junior Alec Conrad. Yahir Gonzalez took 28th for the Raiders and was followed. By Camren Schultz (32nd), Jairo Aguilar (42nd) and Nathan Badillo (50th).

Senior Jacob Olson was Blair-Taylor’s fastest runner and rounded out the top 20 with his race of 19:49.9. Independence/Gilmanton junior Owen Gierok was his team’s lone runner, placing 30th.

Blair-Taylor also saw Armoni Samples place 57th, Wyatt Schrock take 62st and Jerick Cornejo place 65th. Whitehall, meanwhile, was paced by junior Ashton Hanson in 45th place and saw Evander Peterson finish 49th.

The Norse also saw runs from Erick Aguilar (52nd), Armealio Hemenway (53rd), Cayden Faldet-Platteter (56th) and Christopher Mann (59th) in a field of 68 runners.

I/G shines in girls race

Independence/Gilmanton missed first place by a single point in the girls race last Thursday as the team finished with all five counted times in the top 25 overall.

Sylla’s run was defeated only by Addy Duellman of Cochrane-Fountain City, who finished in 19:21.9. 

Sophomore Anna Kent joined her teammate, Sylla, in the top 10 by placing sixth. The I/G co-op also saw sophomore Sophia Kampa (eighth) and freshman Allie Sylla (10th) in the top 10.

The team’s final counted race was from Rielynn Shenahan, who took 24th. The team also got a 37th-place run from Angie Martinez and a 56th-place finish out of Kia Back.

The G-E-T girls team placed fifth on Thursday as all seven runners were among the 30 fastest times. The Red Hawks ran in a tight cluster for the race as seniors Jazzy Tarjeson, Delilah Boberg and Reyna Garcia finished 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively.

Ruby Johnson finished 19th, and Bella Tibbitts added a 23rd-place run for the Red Hawks. Anya Wolfe (27th) and Charlee McCutchen (28th) were also in the top 40 for G-E-T.

Blair-Taylor was led by Jadrean Borreson, who placed 34th in 25:38.8, and also saw Alley Jorgensen finish 47th. Whitehall’s Alexis Kurth finished 36th, while teammate Andreanna Hemenway finished 59th.

Meanwhile for Arcadia, Fanny Gomez was the fastest Raider runner in 26:31.1. The Raiders also saw Leah Zuniga place 53rd, Linsy Cruz place 55th, Malanie Moreno place 57th and Fernanda Garcia take 60th. Shaylah Rodriguez took 63rd for the Raiders.
