Red Hawk football falls to 0-2 with loss to B-W

Just two minutes into the second quarter last Friday, the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School football team appeared to be right back in the game during a battle of the birds.

Quarterback Cody Schmitz had just exploded for a 49-yard touchdown to get the Red Hawks within striking distance of the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks, getting the visitors on the board but still down 21-7.

A 30-yard field goal and a late touchdown to close the half spread the score to a 31-7 lead for the hosts, and a fourth quarter score from Kyle Seiling proved not enough as G-E-T fell to 0-2 on the year despite running for over 200 yards in the 45-15 loss.

The Red Hawks were scheduled to continue with their tough schedule to open the year as La Crosse Aquinas—the top ranked team in Division Five and the defending state champions that went a perfect 14-0 in 2021—visits on Friday.

Last Friday saw the Red Hawks get the running game going, as four players combined for 202 rushing yards. Schmitz led the Red Hawks with the long touchdown and 92 total yards, also going 1-for-5 with 10 yards and an interception through the air.

Nate Schindler added 57 yards for G-E-T, while Seiling contributed 33 yards of his own and senior Warren Stoner added 19. Brady Seiling finished with one yard. Carter Repaal had the only catch for the visitors.

Baldwin-Woodville had its running game in top form, too, as Mason Werner carved the Red Hawks for 102 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Blackhawks totaled 208 yards and three scores in the running game, adding a pair of touchdowns and 151 yards through the air.

The Red Hawk defense got an interception from Schmitz and was paced by seven tackles from Schindler as well as five from Taylor Haney, while Jackson Johansen (11 tackles) and the Baldwin-Woodville defense forced three fumbles and the pick.
