Red Hawk volleyball begins season with Onalaska Sprawl
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School volleyball team opened its 2024 schedule at the Onalaska Sprawl tournament last week, hosted at the Onalaska OmniCenter.
The Red Hawks started the tournament last Wednesday and pushed one of its first four matches to three sets.
Webster defeated G-E-T 25-13, 25-11 in the tournament opener before Mineral Point took down G-E-T 25-11 back to back in two sets. Brookwood defeated the Red Hawks in their third game of the first day, beating G-E-T 25-21 and 25-18.
Sparta handed G-E-T its final loss of the day. Sparta won the opening set with a 25-11 performance, but the G-E-T team had a 25-23 win in the second set before Sparta won the final set 15-9.
Sydney Nelson led G-E-T in total kills with 18, while Amanda Pierson led the team with 25 assists. Clara Schulze paced G-E-T with 29 digs, and Laela Schmitt and Audrey Swenson each served three aces.
The second day of the tournament saw the first wins of the season for the Red Hawks, who finished Thursday with a 2-1 record.
The Red Hawks fell to Northwestern in three sets, recovering from a 25-21 loss in the opening set by winning the second set 25-22 and falling the timebreaker, 15-10.
Pierson had 11 assists to lead G-E-T, while Emma Grams led the team in kills with eight.
The first season of the year for G-E-T came against Iowa-Grant, as the Red Hawks won in two sets with the scores of 25-13 and 25-19. The Red Hawks won their second match of the day against Ashland, winning 25-21 before dropping the second set 14-25 and earning a win with the 15-10 victory in the tiebreaker set.
Statistics were not reported for the final two matches.
The Red Hawks are scheduled to open their Coulee Conference schedule this Thursday at West Salem High School.
