Red Hawks’ season ends in Durand
Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys basketball saw their season come to an end in the opening round of Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Regional play last Tuesday in Durand.
The sixth-seeded Red Hawks fell to the third-seeded Panthers, who advanced to a Friday date with second-seeded Prescott. The Cardinals won Friday, before falling to top-seeded Aquinas in Saturday’s WIAA Regional Final.
G-E-T finished their season at 3-10 including Tuesday’s postseason game, as well as their 3-5 record good for fourth in the Coulee Conference. Tuesday’s game was also the final for seniors Riley Kirkey, Sawyer Schmidt, Luke Vance, Logan Teske, Aiden Lee and Taisei Purney.

A potential upset bid was gaining steam for the Red Hawks at half, as they led 33-23 over the hosting Panthers. Durand won the battle of second-half adjustments however, pulling ahead with a 36-21 scoring margin to defend their home court.
Leading the Red Hawks in scoring were 27 points from freshman Cody Schmitz in his postseason debut. Kirkey tallied 11 points, followed by eight from Vance, six from Schmidt and two from Jack Beedle. Schmidt led the team in rebounds with seven, as well as assists with four.
Kirkey, Schmidt, Schmitz and Vance each tallied two steals, while Beedle tallied six boards and Lee added five rebounds of his own.
