Red Hawks blank Knights after two-game skid

After enduring their first two losses of the season right in a row, the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau softball team returned to their winning ways by steamrolling a conference foe.

The Red Hawks (7-2, 5-1 Coulee Conference) blanked the Luther Knights (2-7, 1-5) for the second time this spring, completing a second season sweep of a Coulee opponent so far in 2026. A day earlier, G-E-T endured a road loss to Altoona (7-4) in non-conference action.

On Thursday, the Red Hawks held an early 2-1 lead on Blair-Taylor when the game was stopped in the top of the second inning due to thunderstorms moving through the area. G-E-T head coach Steve Lyga said they are hoping to find a Wednesday in May to complete the suspended game.

G-E-T travels to Arcadia on Thursday for a rivalry tilt with the Raiders starting at 5 p.m., then kicks off the final May stretch run the following day by hosting La Crosse Logan on Friday at 5 p.m.

Altoona 7 G-E-T 3

One crooked inning was enough to sink the Red Hawks to a non-conference loss last Monday in Altoona.

G-E-T broke a scoreless stalemate in the top of the third, plating a pair on Kennedy Scow’s two-run single with two outs. The Railroaders matched those two runs in the bottom half of the inning, though the Red Hawks went back ahead 3-2 in the fourth when a Joshlyn Lunsford sacrifice fly brought home Claire Baures.

The game was flipped on its head in the bottom of the sixth, where G-E-T committed three errors and Altoona pushed across five runs to fly ahead 7-3. The Red Hawks went down in order in the top of the seventh on three straight groundouts to end the game.

Scow, Baures and Tori Thoma each singled for G-E-T in the defeat.

G-E-T 10 Luther 0

Back in late March, the Red Hawks earned their first conference win of the season with a 10-0 romp over Luther in five innings. In the rematch last Tuesday in Galesville, G-E-T pulled off the exact same feat.

The Red Hawks left little doubt in the final result when they unloaded for an eight-run rally in the bottom of the first, which featured RBI singles by both Alexis Ouellette and Joshlyn Lunsford and Tori Thoma’s double with the bases loaded that brought three runs home.

G-E-T tacked on two additional runs in the third inning, including a Ruby Johnson RBI single.

After Sam Stanton struck out six in four scoreless, hitless innings, Alexys Robinson took over in the pitching circle for the fifth. Though Luther loaded the bases, Robinson got out of it unscathed to secure the mercy-rule victory.

Johnson went 2 for 2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored, Thoma doubled, and Ouellette, Lunsford, Robinson and Lorissa Thompson all singled.
