Red Hawks claim second Coulee softball win
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School softball team improved to 2-4 this year, including 2-1 in conference play, by splitting two games last week.
The Red Hawks rebounded from a loss in Altoona last Monday by ending their week with an 8-0 victory over Westby.
Three more Coulee teams get a crack at the Red Hawks this week as Arcadia visited on Monday and G-E-T went to Black River Falls on Tuesday.
Luther hosts G-E-T this Friday in another conference game, one that comes a day after nonconference opponent Sparta visits the fields at G-E-T Middle School.
Altoona 7 G-E-T 5
Four runs in the top of the seventh inning were not quite enough for G-E-T to fully erase a 7-1 disadvantage last Monday.
The Red Hawks’ offense made its late push with help from Lorissa Thompson stealing home, a Halene DeJager RBI single and a two-run double from Kinley Andersen.
Each team collected nine hits in the game. DeJager, Caroline Mack and Haley Giemza each finished with two for G-E-T.
Rylee Spindler was a force for the Railroaders (4-6 this season)—Spindler hit 2-for-3 and scored twice for the hosts, also pitching 6 2/3 innings to the tune of five hits allowed, nine strikeouts and no walks.
Samantha Stanton pitched four innings for the visitors, giving up three earned runs on eight hits, three strikeouts and three walks. DeJager pitched the final two innings and conceded no runs on one hit.
G-E-T 8 Westby 0
Batting was no concern for the Red Hawks in Friday’s conference win over the Norse (0-5, 0-3 Coulee) at Westby High School.
A home run from Giemza, a triple from Tatum Johnson and two-hit days for Mack and Tori Thoma helped G-E-T double Westby in hits, 10-5.
The Red Hawks also drew eight walks.
DeJager picked up her second win of the season on the mound, throwing seven strikeouts and four walks.
