Red Hawks downed by Spartans
In their final taste of action before a mini break for Thanksgiving, the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau girls basketball team fell behind early and saw things spiral from there in a road loss to Sparta.
The Spartans (2-0) rolled to an 87-42 victory over G-E-T (0-2) in their non-conference tilt last Tuesday at the Alton D. Ask Gymnasium in Sparta.
The Red Hawks trailed 32-6 in the middle stages of the first half and wound up being behind 51-23 at the halftime intermission. The Spartans outscored G-E-T 36-19 over the final 18 minutes to pad their margin of victory to 45 when all was said and done.
Leading scorers for the Red Hawks in that loss included a slew of sophomore contributors: Kennedy Scow with nine points, Alexis Ouellette with seven points and the duo of Brookelynn Keller and Claire Baures with six points apiece.
Baures hauled in eight rebounds as well, a total that was matched by senior Lexi James.
Helping set the scoring pace for the victorious Spartans, who had previously eked out a 58-56 win over Mauston in their season opener, were senior Elexa Jones with 26 points, junior Abby Berendes with 12 points and senior Izzy Mickelson with 10 points.
After a week and half without a game, the Red Hawks are back out on the road to face the La Crosse Logan Rangers (0-2) on Friday at 7:15 p.m. in La Crosse.
