Red Hawks drop pair to open season
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau baseball team suffered a pair of losses to open the new campaign this spring.
The Red Hawks (0-2) faltered after a hot start against La Crosse Logan in their 2025 season opener and then were beaten more soundly by Prescott the following evening.
Following early week road games against Onalaska Luther and Tomah, G-E-T is back home when they host Luther on Thursday at 5 p.m., Prairie du Chien on Saturday at 10 a.m., Viroqua on Monday at 5 p.m. and Mauston on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Logan 6 G-E-T 5
A four-run rally in the first inning of the new season had the Red Hawks riding high early on against the Rangers (2-0) last Thursday in Galesville. Unfortunately for G-E-T, the offense dried up the rest of the way in a one-run loss.
After loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first, the Red Hawks plated four runs with a rally that included Caiden Brady’s bases-loaded walk and Mitchell Thell’s RBI single.
Logan slowly chipped away over the next several innings before leapfrogging ahead 6-4 with three runs in the top of the fifth. Sam De Jager sliced that deficit in half for G-E-T with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, but the Red Hawks were unable to score the tying run in the last two innings despite getting a runner into scoring position in both the sixth and seventh.
De Jager led the way for G-E-T by going 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Brady got the start on the mound for the Red Hawks with both Ben Hansen and Oliver Marley coming on in relief. Hansen took the loss, though all four of his runs allowed were unearned.
Prescott 13 G-E-T 3
The Cardinals (1-0) jumped on the Red Hawks early and never looked back in a six-inning victory last Friday in Prescott.
After G-E-T went down in order in the top of the first, Prescott unloaded for six runs in the bottom half of the inning. They pushed that lead to 7-0 after adding another run in the fourth.
The Red Hawks finally got on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth that included a Jackson Burns RBI single. However, the Cardinals scored three times in both the fifth and the sixth to bring the mercy rule into effect.
De Jager, Hansen, Burns, Brady and Marley each singled for G-E-T. The Red Hawks used five pitchers in the game: Ben Filla, Calvin Davis, De Jager, Thell and Oliver Remus.
