Schmitz leads G-E-T boys past Holmen

A 34-point night from Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School sophomore Cody Schmitz helped the Red Hawks past Holmen last Monday.

The host Vikings held an eight-point lead at the break, but the Red Hawks (4-1) outscored Holmen 38-26 in the second half to steal the win.

For Schmitz, the game was a bounce back from the team’s Dec. 13 loss to Bangor, in which he scored a season-low 17 points. The sophomore leads the state, averaging 38 points per game, as the 34 he scored against Holmen was the fourth time he has topped 30 points this season.  Holmen (3-6 this season) was led by a 14-point effort from freshman Kaiden Wilber.

G-E-T senior Will Thompson corralled a game-high 10 rebounds.

G-E-T played Richland Center in a tournament at La Crosse Aquinas on Monday before continuing the tournament with an opponent not yet announced on Tuesday.
