Second-half runs help Indees win two

The Independence/Gilmanton girls basketball team turned a couple of close games into comfortable wins with runs in the second half last week.

The Indees went on a 12-0 run to pull away from New Auburn for a 51-44 road win last week Monday. On Thursday, the team scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 10-point lead then held off Augusta down the stretch for another road victory.

The wins put the Indees at 14-3 overall and kept them tied with Eleva-Strum atop the Dairyland Conference-Large Division with a 10-3 mark. With a loss on Friday, Whitehall dropped to 9-4 and Melrose-Mindoro remains in contention with a 10-5 record.

This figures to be a big week for the Indees. After playing at Osseo-Fairchild on Monday, I/G hosted Eleva-Strum on Tuesday. The team welcomes Alma/Pepin in Gilmanton on Friday. I/G hosts Eau Claire Immanuel this coming Tuesday.

A late 12-0 run put the Indees on top of what was a close game.

The Indees trailed by a point with about six minutes remaining in the game, but they didn’t allow the Trojans to score again until the final seconds. Transition layups by Nora Schank and Anna Kent put the Indees ahead by three. 

The team went inside to Shauna Dejno for a basket that made the score 45-40 with about three minutes remaining. From there, the Indees clinched the game from the free-throw line, making five free throws to take a 51-40 lead with less than a minute remaining.

Dejno and Rielynn Sheahan both scored 14 points for the Indees.

The Indees went on a run to start the second half then held the Beavers off down the stretch.

I/G took a three-point lead into halftime, but that quickly grew to double-digits when Sheahan knocked down a three pointer and Dejno scored four straight points.

The Beavers got back within five with about six minutes remaining, but the Indees went back inside to Dejno before Kniseley got a layup in transition to make it a nine-point game.

Augusta kept battling, but Sheahan knocked down another shot from deep to make the score 56-45 then Dejno scored inside again as the Indees took a 13-point advantage with in the final minutes.

Sheahan finished with 19 points, including five three-pointers for the Indees. Dejno added 11.
