A rocky season came to an end for the Independence girls basketball team last Wednesday as they struggled to get baskets in the second half.

The Indees were in their Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Five quarterfinal game in the second half, but they managed just 12 points in the half as the Cardinals ran away with a 51-30 win.

Independence played the game without three of its top players. Seniors Alana Back was injured before the season, Avery Pape was the team’s leading scorer before she was injured midseason and Amiah Ives had been one of the top players before a late-season injury knocked her out of the game.

The Indees finished the season with a record of 8-15.

The Indees trailed by five early in the second half, but a 14-0 Eleva-Strum run put the game away.

Rhianna Theisen scored early in the second half to make the score 25-20, but the Cardinals came back with a basket by Madison Schultz and Grace Clark knocked in a three pointer to put E-S ahead by 10.

Jayden Bautch scored the next two baskets then Paige Hanner made a three. Bautch scored again, making the score 39-20 and capping a 14-0 run.

Independence’s Mackenzie Taylor scored to officially end the run, but the Cardinals maintained control until the end.

E-S scored 14 of the first 15 points in the game before the Indees started chipping away. A 7-2 run got the Indees within eight and they were within seven at 25-18 at halftime.

Offensive efficiency was the difference in the game. The Cardinals shot 46 percent from the field and had just eight turnovers, while Independence shot 33 percent and had 18 turnovers.

Callie Zastrow led the Indees with nine points while Aubrie Pronschisnke scored six, Ahnna Bautch, Adison Pronschinske and Taylor all scored four and Theisen finished with three points and nine rebounds.
