State bound AHS soccer team pulls off sectional upsets

In the program’s 10th year, the Arcadia soccer team was able to break through and qualify for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association State Tournament with two wins last week.

The team has been regular competitors in the sectional round and has had two sectional final matches, but last week the team got over the hump. The week began with a 2-1 win over a previously undefeated Barron team in the sectional semifinal in Barron last week Thursday. On Saturday, they scored early to take a lead over Columbus Catholic as they won the sectional final in Marshfield 4-1 to advance to the state tournament.

Arcadia enters the state tournament with an 8-2 record and will be the fourth seed at Kewaskum High School on Saturday, playing at 2 p.m. against top-seeded The Prairie School. The state championship game will be played at 7 p.m. the same day with the winner of Arcadia’s match playing the winner of the match between (2) University School of Milwaukee and (3) St. Lawrence Seminary.

Two second half goals helped the Raiders beat the top team in their half of the sectional bracket.

Barron came into the match with a 10-0 record and took an early lead with a goal in the 20th minute.

Arcadia’s Cesar Uriel tied the match with a goal in the 50th minute of the second half, before Bill Breska scored off of a Nathan Marticorena pass to give the Raiders the lead.

The Raiders held Barron off for the rest of the match to advance to the sectional final.

The Raiders came out strong with two goals in the first 16 minutes and they never looked back.

After scoring the game-winner in the semifinal match, Breska found the back of the net with Marticorena getting the assist in the sixth minute. Hugo Hernandez then put Arcadia ahead 2-0 with a goal 10 minutes later.

Columbus scored right before the end of the half, getting a goal in the 44th minute, but Arcadia put the match away in the second half as Breska scored two more goals.

Breska’s first goal came in the 66th minute off of an assist by Lizandro Basquez then he scored again in the 75th minute with Ricardo Juarez assisting.

The last goal put the match away and sent the Raiders to the state tournament.
