Tigers upset Red Hawk boys

The Black River Falls Tigers pulled off an upset to hand the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys basketball team a Coulee Conference loss last week.

The visiting Tigers (4-14 overall, 1-9 Coulee Conference) held back the Red Hawks’ usually potent offense as the hosts were held below the 50-point threshold for just the third time in 2023-24.

Black River Falls’ win was their first this year in the Coulee.

Senior Cody Schmitz scored 24 points to lead G-E-T, while Black River Falls had two players scoring often—Braylon Backaus led the Blackhawks with 20 points, and Colin Zilmer added 16.

Two more Coulee opponents will see the Red Hawks this week as G-E-T visited Arcadia (10-10, 4-6 Coulee) on Tuesday and hosts conference leader West Salem (17-2, 9-0 Coulee) this Thursday.
