Two area golfers advance to Division 3 sectional

While none of the area teams finished high enough to advance every member to this week’s Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Three Cochrane-Fountain City sectional, two teams will still be represented by individuals with a chance to qualify for the state tournament.

Whitehall golfer Nolan Sonsalla and Blair-Taylor’s Kyle Jahr finished among the top four individuals who weren’t on qualifying teams and will see their seasons continue.

Jahr, a senior, was the top individual who wasn’t on a qualifying team as he finished fourth overall, shooting an 82 at Drugan’s Castle Mound Golf Course for the Onalaska Luther regional last Tuesday. Jahr shot a four-over 39 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine.

Sonsalla and teammate Cayden Faldet-Platteter both had scores of 88, tying for 11th overall. Sonsalla shot a 43 on the front nine and a 45 on the back. Faldet-Platteter had 44 on both the front and back nines. However, Sonsalla finished better on a playoff hole to claim the final individual qualifying spot.

C-FC won the competition with a team score of 335, three strokes better than Alma/Pepin. Mondovi was third with a 352, and Eleva-Strum claimed the last team qualifying spot with a 358, beating Luther on a playoff hole. Whitehall took sixth with a 371, followed by B-T at 387, Osseo-Fairchild at 392, and Independence/Gilmanton with a 426.

Kysen Estenson had the third-best score for Whitehall, shooting a 97 while Jaxon Tollefson also broke 100 with a 98. Corbin Larson was the team’s fifth golfer, shooting a 107.

Jaxon Boe shot a 97 for the second-best score on B-T, while Evan Boe turned in a 103, Blake Simmons shot a 105, and Brody Poppe had a 129.

Garet Bouzek led I/G with a 99, followed by Payton Hovey with a 104, Braden Williams with a 111, and Jonah Rombalski with a 112.

The C-FC sectional teed off Tuesday morning at Trempealeau Mountain Golf Course. From there, the first two teams and three individuals who are not on those teams will advance to the state tournament. The state tournament will be held next Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.
