Whitehall’s Carroll qualifies for state track meet

Whitehall High School senior Kevin Carroll will be returning to Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state competition.

Carroll qualified for the state cross country meet last fall and was the only area qualifier from the WIAA Mondovi Sectional held last Thursday. The Whitehall runner made the state meet in the 800, while just missing out in the 1600.

Several others competed in the sectional after cracking the top four in the Mondovi regional held on Monday of the same week, but none were able to make the top four in the sectional.

Carroll will run during the afternoon session of Friday’s meet at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. There will be two heats for both Divisions Two and Three and the place winners will be based on the times in those heats, there will not be a final race on Saturday.

Mondovi regional

Whitehall’s Kevin Carroll and Blair-Taylor’s Paige Kelly qualified for the sectional in three running events, including one first-place finish.

Carroll won the 800 at the Mondovi regional, took second in the 1600 and was on the fourth-place 1600 relay team. Meanwhile, Kelly won the 300 hurdles, took second in the 100 and was on the fourth-place 1600 relay team for the Wildcats. 

Ben Mohan gave the Whitehall boys two regional champions as he won the high jump. He was also on the second-place 3200 relay team along with Payton Thompson, Colton Pank and Jonathan Thorn. 

Thorn ran on both qualifying relay teams and was second in the 400. Thompson and Cayden Johnston were also on the 1600 team. In addition to qualifying on the 3200 team, Pank was fourth in the high jump.

Ben Pyka had two third-place finishes for I/G in the 100 and the long jump. Michael Onstad qualified by taking fourth in the 1600. He was fifth in the 3200.

Delorean Peterson qualified for two events for the B-T boys, taking third in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200. DaVonne Turner took second in the 200 as did Kaden Kruse in the high jump.

Sara Steffenson finished third in the long jump for the B-T girls and ran on the 1600 relay team with Kelly, McKenzie Brandenburg and Ella Halverson. Lou Castrique qualified by taking fourth in the high jump.

Kia Back was a sectional qualifier in both the 3200 and 1600 for I/G as she finished fourth in those races. Callie Zastrow was third in the shot put. 

Avery Sonsalla qualified by taking third in the 400 and fourth in the triple jump. Olivia Killian finished third in the triple jump and Mia Sygulla was fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Mondovi sectional

Carroll qualified for the state meet in one event and just missed in another.

The Whitehall senior was in a grouping with two other runners racing for second, behind champion Taytor Lowry from Neillsville. Lowry finished the race in just over two minutes, not quite two seconds better than Carroll. Two other runners both finished right at the finish line with Carroll, but the Whitehall runner edged them.

Carroll also had the second-best finish amongst area runners, taking fifth in the 1600, less than a second behind the fourth-place finisher and final state qualifier. 

The only other area athletes to crack the top five at the meet were Kelly of B-T in the 300 hurdles and Whitehall’s Sonsalla in the triple jump.

Kelly missed qualifying for the state meet in three events as she was on the 11th-place 1600 relay team and took 13th in the 100. 

Killian took 11th in the triple jump for Whitehall and Sygulla was 12th in the 100 hurdles.

Zastrow was 12th for the I/G girls in the shot put and Back took 14th in the 1600.

The Whitehall boys got an eighth-place finish from Mohan in the high jump while the 1600 and 3200 relay teams both took ninth and Pank was 11th in the triple jump.

Pyka was eighth in the 100 and long jump for the Indees, as was Onstad in the 1600.

Turner led the B-T boys taking ninth in the 200 while Peterson was 10th in the 1600 and 3200, as was Kruse in the high jump.
