Whitehall girls team ends season with regional loss

One of the more successful seasons in recent program history came to an end last week when the Whitehall girls basketball team lost in the opening round of regional play to Cadott.

While they showed significant improvement from years past, offensive struggles haunted the Norse all season and did so again last week Tuesday as they scored 15 points in the first half and lost 53-40.

Whitehall was the 10th seed and finished the season with a 5-18 overall record. The five wins Whitehall managed were two more than they had the previous three seasons combined and the most since the 2014-15 team won seven games.

Cadott 53 Whitehall 40 - The Norse struggled on shots close to the basket as they fell behind early.

For the game, Whitehall shot 29.2 percent from the field and 27.5 percent on two-point attempts. Included in those numbers was a nine-for-23 performance on shots underneath the basket, while Cadott went 17-for-27.

The Hornets were able to get to the basket early as they took a 24-15 lead into halftime. Whitehall’s offense improved in the second half, but the Hornets maintained control of the game and went on to win by 13.

In her final game for the Norse, Ariel Koxlien led the team with 14 points while Olivia Youngbauer added seven, Sam Huff and Nicoya Yarrington both scored five, Kensie Beighley finished with four, Elle Matejka scored three and Abby Semb had two.
