Whitehall girls team returns experience with new coach

The Whitehall girls basketball team will have several familiar faces on the court, but it will be a new one leading the team from the bench.

Christina Cantlon takes over the program from Beth Lisowski, who left the district. Cantlon played collegiately at St. Olaf college and has coached youth basketball at various lev-els.

She’ll take over a program that returns four of its top five leading scorers in terms of points per game last year.

Norah Youngbauer and Avery Sonsalla are both senior guards who started for the team last year. Youngbauer was second on the team, averaging 7.9 points per game, while Sonsalla averaged 4.6. Other returning seniors include Vaida Goplin and Mia Sygulla.

Olivia Killian led the team in rebounding as a junior, averaging 8.3 per game, while also scoring 7.2 points – the third-best mark on the team. Trinity Aasen scored 5.8 points per game as a freshman.

The Norse finished last season with a 12-12 record as they fared well in non-conference games, but went 5-10 in a difficult Dairyland Conference.

Whitehall’s season began on Tuesday of this week with a non-conference game in In-dependence. They’ll host Port Edward for another non-conference game on Thursday. This com-ing Tuesday, they’ll host Plum City/Elmwood before welcoming Cochrane-Fountain City next week Tuesday.
