Whitehall girls win three in DC

Back to full health, the Whitehall girls basketball team came away with three convincing Dairyland Conference wins last week.

While the final margin of last week Monday’s win was just eight points, the Norse were in control of the game against Augusta for most of the contest. They had little trouble dispatching Alma/Pepin 54-17 then pulled away from Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran in the second half.

The wins put Whitehall’s record at 11-5 on the season and 7-5 in Dairyland Conference play, behind only Blair-Taylor in the Large Division. The Norse continued DC play this week Tuesday with a game at Gilmanton and will head to B-T this coming Monday to begin the final week of the regular season.

Whitehall 58 Augusta 50

The Norse got off to a fast start and maintained control throughout.

It was one of the better shooting performances for Whitehall as they shot 44.7 percent from the field and made seven-of-17 three-point attempts. The hot shooting helped them build up a 38-23 lead by halftime.

Whitehall maintained control throughout nearly the entire second half. Augusta chipped away and got within 10 points late, but Whitehall held on for the win.

The Beavers shot 40 percent from the field and made five-of-11 three pointers. Both teams made nine free throws, Augusta had 15 attempts, Whitehall had 18.

Abby Semb led Whitehall with 16 points, two more than Nylah Lisowski, who had 1 and 10 rebounds. Olivia Youngbauer added 13 for Whitehall while Sami Huff scored nine, Brenna Clatt had four and Norah Youngbauer finished with three.

Whitehall 54 A/P 17

Whitehall’s defense shut the Eagles down, holding them to less than 20 percent shooting from the field while forcing 29 turnovers.

Defense helped lead to offense for Whitehall in the first half, but they also created on their own, knocking down four three pointers as they built up a 30-7 lead by halftime. The Norse let up a little bit in the second half, but still cruised for the win.

It was a balanced scoring attack for Whitehall as Lisowski led the team with 12 points while both Norah Youngbauer and Semi scored 11. Olivia Youngbauer added six, Huff and Clatt both scored five, Nicoya Yarrington and Janna Thoma both had six points.

While A/P shot 16.2 percent from the field, the Norse finished at 42.9 percent. Both teams struggled at the charity stripe as Whitehall was two-for-11 and A/P was four-for-15.

Whitehall 58 ECI 41

After a close battle in the first half, Whitehall’s defense shut ECI down as they pulled away for the win.

The Norse had a three-point lead at halftime, but held the Lancers to just six field goals in the second half. Whitehall got three-point shots by Sonsalla, Norah Youngbauer and Olivia Youngbauer to help extend their lead and their aggressiveness paid off with 21 free-throw attempts in the second frame in which they outscored ECI 31-17.

Whitehall’s early lead was, in large part, due to Semb’s 13 points, including three three pointers. She finished with a game-high 20. Norah Youngbauer added 15, Olivia Youngbauer scored seven, Sonsalla finished with six, Lisowski, five; Huff, three and Pientok, two.

Whitehall not only shot 46.3 percent from the field in the game, but they rebounded 12 of their 22 misses; controlling the glass 33-21.
