It was a difficult start for the Whitehall softball team, but they ended the week with a win.

The Norse played mostly tight against Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Tuesday and Pepin/Alma on Thursday, but bad innings in each game led to lopsided final scores. They avoided the bad inning against Eleva-Strum on Thursday, however, and came away with a 9-4 win.

Whitehall began this week with a 1-4 record, if weather cooperates, they could host Independence/Gilmanton on Friday. Their next scheduled action is a doubleheader at Blair-Taylor this coming Tuesday before another doubleheader against Alma Center Lincoln next Thursday.

Two tough inning puts the Norse in a big hole.

The Lancers scored five runs on four walks, three hit batters and two hits in the top of the third then exploded for 10 runs on four hit batters, three walks and four hits – including two triples and a double — in the next frame.

Whitehall had a chance to take an early lead when Carson Coburn tripled to begin the bottom of the second, but two strikeouts and a fly out ended that threat. That was Whitehall’s only hit in the game.

Kelsie Klomsten took the loss, pitching the first 1.2 innings with five hits and four walks allowed. Ashlyn Clatt struck out one while walking five and allowing three hits in 2.1 innings before Harlow Foss retired all three batters she faced.

Whitehall hit the ball well, but they couldn’t keep up with the Eagles.

The Eagles scored four runs in the first, taking advantage of four walks and an error, consecutive doubles plated one run for Whitehall in the bottom half of the inning and a Harlow Foss RBI single cut the lead to two in the second, but they were never able to quite catch up.

P/A scored three in the third, Whitehall answered with two in the bottom half, but an eight-run fourth was too much for the Norse to overcome.

The Norse had 12 hits in the game – compared to eight for the Eagles. Zoey George led Whitehall, going three-for-three, while Kyla Lambeck, Clatt, Coburn all had two hits.

Clatt got the start and the loss, pitching three innings with four strikeouts and seven walks. Foss pitched one inning with four walks and Klomsten struck out one and walked one in an inning of work.

The Norse took an early lead then held on late for their first win.

A dropped third strike helped Whitehall’s offense get started in the second as what would’ve been an inning-ending strikeout ended up with George on first base. Lambeck and Addison Herman hit consecutive doubles – the second of which plated two runs. Eden Matejka then singled to make the score 3-0.

Foss and Clatt both singled to start the third inning and both stole home to put the Norse ahead 5-0.

The Cardinals fought back with three runs in the fifth, but Whitehall responded with three in the sixth as George brought one run home with a single and Matejka plated two with a bunt single.

Whitehall had 11 hits in the game as Foss, Clatt, Herman and Matejka all had two. Matejka led the team with three RBIs.

Clatt and Klomsten combined to pitch the Norse to the win. Klomsten got the start and pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and three walks, while striking out six. Clatt finished the game, not allowing a hit or walk, while striking out two.
