WHS girls lose two in DC play

The Whitehall girls basketball team had a difficult time getting points on the board in two losses last week.

The Norse failed to score more than 32 points in either game as they got off to slow starts and never recovered, falling to Eleva-Strum last Tuesday and Cochrane-Fountain City on Friday.

Whitehall is 4-4 on the season, but just 1-4 in Dairyland Conference play, ahead of only Augusta in the DC-Large standings.

The Norse hosted Independence on Tuesday of this week. They defeated the Indees 40-34 in their season-opener on Nov. 16, but Tuesday’s matchup will count toward the conference standings.

After that game, Whitehall will be off until Jan. 4 when they host Granton.

E-S 49 Whitehall 31

Whitehall couldn’t get its offense going as they trailed by 14 at the half.

The Norse managed just 13 first half points as they struggled from the field while the Cardinals were able to use a balanced attack.

Whitehall’s offense picked up in the second half, but E-S remained in control, pulling away for the 18-point win.

Three E-S players scored 11 or more points as Madison Schultz led the team with 15, Paige Hanner scored 12 and Jaden Bautch finished with 11.

Norah Youngbauer led Whitehall with 10, both Olivia Killian and Nylah Lisowski had seven, Avery Sonsalla scored three and both Trinity Aasen and Brenna Clatt finished with two.

C-FC 66 Whitehall 32

It was another tough offensive performance for the Norse as they fell behind early.

Whitehall stuck with C-FC for a part of the first half, but the Pirates scored 34 points to take a 15-point advantage into halftime.

Even if C-FC hadn’t scored a point in the second half, the Norse wouldn’t have caught up. They managed just 13 in the second frame and went on to lose by 34.

Whitehall shot 22.4 percent compared to 52.7 percent for C-FC. Norah Youngbauer led the Norse with nine points, Olivia Killian scored eight, Avery Sonsalla, six; Nicoya Yarrington, four; Sydney Matheny and Nylah Lisowski, two and Susie Rodriguez, one.
