WHS softball team splits first two
After suffering a lopsided loss to one of the area’s best teams, the Whitehall softball team picked up a win in extra innings.
The Norse couldn’t keep up with Blair-Taylor last week Tuesday as the Wildcats scored an 18-0 win. On Friday, however, Whitehall went back-and-forth before scoring in the bottom of the eighth to beat Alma Center Lincoln.
With a 1-1 record, the Norse were scheduled to play at Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday of this week before hosting Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday and heading to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran for a game on Friday.
Whitehall 7 ACL 6
After the Hornets rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning, the Norse got the win with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Whitehall had an early lead after scoring two runs in the second before the Hornets tied it in the third. ACL took a lead with one in the top of the fourth, but Whitehall matched it in the bottom half of the inning.
The Norse appeared to take control with three runs in the fifth, but the Hornets stung them for three of their own in the next half-inning, tying the game 6-6.
That’s where the score stood as neither team scored in the seventh, but Whitehall was able to push a run across in the eighth for the win.
Whitehall had 14 hits in the game as Zoey George led the way, going three-for-four with two RBIs. Aubrea Smieja was two-for-four with an RBI and got the win, striking out 10 while walking nine and allowing six hits.
